Access control for a small business, without the enterprise price tag

Commercial · August 11, 2026 · 5 min · Alvarez Professional Locksmiths

You do not need a corporate security budget to stop reissuing keys every time someone leaves. Here is what a right-sized system looks like.

The moment a business has more than a handful of staff, mechanical keys start costing money in a way that never shows up on an invoice. Someone leaves, the key does not come back, and the honest answer is that every lock they could open is now questionable.

The problem keys cannot solve

A key cannot be revoked. It can only be replaced, which means rekeying every cylinder it opened and reissuing keys to everyone else. Do that twice a year and the cost of "just using keys" becomes obvious.

Access control replaces the physical key with a credential — a card, a fob, a code or a phone — that can be switched off in seconds without touching the door.

What a right-sized system includes

For most single-site businesses in Tampa Bay, that means:

  • Readers on the two or three doors that actually matter: the main entrance, the back-of-house door, and the stockroom or office.
  • Credentials for each person rather than each door, so you revoke a person, not a key.
  • A door position sensor on the delivery door, so you know when it has been propped open.
  • Mechanical override on at least one door, because a system that fails closed during a power cut is its own emergency.

Everything else — turnstiles, biometrics, badge printing — is worth revisiting when you have a second location, not before.

Scheduling around your hours

Commercial installations do not have to close the business. Most of ours are done at night or on a weekend so no door is out of service during trading hours. We document every credential we issue and hand you the list, so the system stays yours rather than ours.

Multi-site and property managers

If you run several locations, the value is consistency: the same credential works where it should, the same keying scheme applies everywhere, and there is one document that says who can open what. That is the part most operators tell us they were missing.
